Today was a big road trip day. We had to make our way south so we could eventually check into our hotel in Dublin. Crazy to think our time in Ireland is almost over!
Before we set out, we stopped by “The Dark Hedges.” If you’re a Game of Thrones fan, you might recognize the trees from the iconic tv series! We arrived fairly early and missed the tour bus crowds and were able to get some great shots before people started to appear!
We also stopped by the home of Sir Toby Caulfeild. While I don’t think you should travel out of your way to see this spot, I do love how historical buildings are everywhere you go! You might even stumble upon some without even trying! Those are the best finds!
Next stop for the day: Derry, Northern Ireland. Derry or Londonderry is the second largest city in Northern Ireland. It is also a location of where “The Troubles” started, with the “Battle of the Bogside” and the “Bloody Sunday.” Lately, there have been several political events taking place in the area, and we thought it would be a great teaching moment to fill ourselves in.
We stumbled upon the First Presbyterian Church, where church members eagerly showed us around the property. Since I grew up attending Methodist and Presbyterian churches, I found the tour really interesting!
Afterwards, we walked the city walls, which were constructed in 1613. Derry is one of the remaining completely walled cities in Ireland, with a circumference of roughly one mile. There are 4 gates and several cannons placed throughout the wall, which is also walkable! I really enjoyed being able to walk around and look down on the charming city.
We stopped in shops, walked the streets, and eventually grabbed a bite to eat for lunch. Then we were off- to Dublin!
For the next 2 nights, we stayed at The Carlton Hotel- Dublin Airport. As the name suggests, it was RIGHT beside the airport. This made it super convenient to leave for our early flight two days later.
