Venice, Italy Day 7: Rialto Bridge, Bookstores & Tom Holland

We went back to the Rialto Bridge this morning. We saw it just before it got dark last night, but wanted to come back and see it earlier in the day (and hopefully less crowded). We took a few pictures (which I think turned out pretty well!). The bridge is the oldest of 4 bridges that span across the Grand Canal here in Venice. The 160 year old bridge was designed and built by Antonio da Ponte and his nephew, following a design competition (which Michelangelo entered!). It’s known for its Renaissance engineering achievement, and was originally made of timber. Of course, over time, this wears down, especially when a revolt burned a portion of it (now there’s marble). Several people thought the bridge would collapse, since it’s a single span bridge with no middle support and extremely heavy. As we can see now, it has stood the test of time (with some repairs). It connects the districts of San Marco and San Polo and acts as a huge tourist attraction (aka a hot spot for pick-pocketers). It’s amazing how massive the bridge is in person- definitely a must see if you’re in Venice!

After we walked on the bridge, we went to Libreria Acqua Alta, a unique bookstore. A gondola sits in the middle of the bookstore, holding books up (“incase of flooding”). Resident cats strolled around greeted incoming customers. If you make your way back to the bookstore, you’ll see a small court-yard with a staircase made out of books. I have to admit, I first saw this bookshop on Pinterest with it’s picture-worthy staircase made of books.

Now, let’s get to the part that probably caught some of your eyes: Tom Holland. Before I get your hopes up, we didn’t *see* him. BUT he posted that he was in Burano the day after we were (UGH). They were filling the newest Spiderman movie. My sister’s sleuthing skills paid off and we were able to find his hotel on the main island-lol- where we took the picture below. He’s in there somewhere with Zendaya!

We stopped by Alberto Valese- Ebru’s Paper-making shop and picked up a few printed leather pouches and cards. Italy is known for its leather goods, so we picked up a few from this local store.

We finished the day with dinner by the water. I got an iconic Bellini and we watched the sun set behind our hotel. Tomorrow we start our trek home from the Floating City, but we’ll be staying overnight in Dublin, Ireland. We have a 15-hour layover so we’ll see the Book of Kells at Trinity College and spend the night before we head home.
